Musical Director for Summer Music Program for NYC Kids

NYC nonprofit, Statement Arts, is seeking an experienced Musical Director to work with 25 NYC kids, grades 36, for 2 weeks in July as part of our StART Young program (formerly known as Empower Youth Through Performance). Must have excellent piano skills.

Job Description:
The Musical Director, in conjunction with the Acting Teacher, will create and implement a curriculum that will inspire and empower students by using, among other art forms, music, dance, improv, acting, script writing, monologues, etc. The curriculum should include a writing and social justice component and should be informed by the subjects that matter to the students. In addition, will provide other musical support functions. The instructional component of this position will commence July 2019 and will culminate in a performance that the students and staff create themselves, with songs from Broadway musicals and beyond. We will also need 35 pages of written curriculum prior to the start of the program. This position is located at the United Palace of Cultural Arts in Washington Heights, NYC.

Experience:
The Musical Director should have excellent piano skills, as well as singing and coaching experience. Must have good knowledge of Broadway musicals as well as some classical and contemporary pieces. StART Young is a fun, rewarding, and creative environment. You must be professional, patient, reliable, encouraging, and able to work with both elementary and middle school students.

Applicants must provide at least 2 professional references and show a love for teaching!

Recommended Minimum Requirements:
A Bachelor’s Degree in Music (a minor in music is ok), or 5+ years music teaching experience.

Dates: July 8 - 19, Monday – Friday

Time: 9:00am 2:00pm

Location: The United Palace of Cultural Arts, 175th St. and Broadway

There is 1 performance, 1 staff meeting, and 1 final meeting.

Performance: Friday, July 19 (1:00 - 2:00pm)

Stipend: $1,400 (10 Days)
