In August 2009, Statement Arts launched The Think Theater Project. This educational theater program was offered to the children of LGBT families at family week in Provincetown, Massachusetts. For the past twelve years, Family Week has been dedicated to enriching the lives of LGBT families from around the world. The Think Theater Project is thrilled to fill the need for educational theater throughout the week.
In 2009, The Think Theater Project’s team of actors and arts educators offered performances of the play Peacemaker, by David Holman. The play, geared for children ages 4-7years old, focused on tolerance, diversity and the importance of accepting others that are different from us. In addition, we offered Out of the Box, an improvisation workshop, which allowed the students to express themselves freely in a safe and playful environment, free of judgment.
Based on feedback from our 2009 programming, The Think Theater project chose to produce SuperBen! by, Philip Mutz. SuperBen!, geared for ages 5-9 years old, is the adventure of Ben and Leslie, two wildly imaginative best friends, who are given a sudden dose of reality when Ben starts getting bullied at school. This world premier play tackles serious issues and offers real-life solutions. The play was followed by a short workshop in which the actors talk about the themes of the play with fun, age-appropriate activities for the kids.
Theater offers a unique opportunity where participants can learn about actions and consequences, about others, and about themselves. The Think Theater Project strives to create a safe environment where children and adults can explore and discuss issues that spark critical thinking relevant to their life experiences.
