Project: Urban Arts

Project Leaders - Liza Politi & Zahaira Curiel

At Statement Arts, we believe that the arts are a road to empowerment. Sadly, many public school students in New York Cities' under-served communities have little to no access to the Arts. There is a real need to empower under-served, minority and low-income youth through arts education that goes beyond the classroom. Statement Arts is equipped to help fill this gap by providing qualified teaching artists and mentors to young kids, introducing them to music and theater. For two weeks in July and August, in partnership with The United Palace of Cultural Arts, Statement Arts will be running two free* summer art programs. Our first program will provide children in grades 3-6 and 7-10 introductory classes in acting, singing and dance. In our second program, The College Prep Intensive, three teaching artists will lead rigorous classes in auditioning and performance techniques. These students will take part in master classes, private voice lessons, and interpretive coaching, culminating in a showcase performance. There will also be an essay-writing workshop that will focus on their college essays and applications. Both programs are community based and are free* of charge to the children.

Project: A Single Drop of Water
Winner: Catch Me

Project Leaders - Nicola Kinsella, Liza Politi

A Single Drop of Water is an arts based environmental awareness and education program that uses photography to document the journey of water. Our goal is to raise awareness about the importance of this precious resource and its scarcity in many communities.

The project provides photographers with a platform for sharing their images and stories. A Single Drop of Water also provides inspiration to photographers with access to particularly underprivileged areas, where clean water is scarce. Winning entries will be exhibited in New York City, and will be used in future Statement Arts education materials to teach our students about water and inspire them produce their own artistic work to further environmental awareness.
